Magic and Me...

I have a few things that I would like to get off my chest.

It has really been a long time since I did anything Magic related for my website as well as on the playing side of things.

Firstly, I would like to apologise to all the loyal Magic players out there that visited the site regularly to have a look at what my meanderings were for the week. You guys are the reason why I am giving the website attention again.

Then to my loyal and faithful friends that have never abandoned the game of Magic nor shunned me as I took my sabbatical from Magic.

Now the questions remain, what and why and all things in between.

When I made my intentions known to my friends that I was taking a break from Magic, they all smiled and said that I must just make one promise.

“DON’T sell your cards!”

At first, I was perplexed that they did not want to talk me out of taking a break, but rather make sure that my collection of cards stayed in my study bookcase, happily collecting dust. My first thought was that they saw it as a collection leaving the team’s card pool but soon I realised that the team’s pool is strong enough not to rely on my cards. Sure, the odd card asked for and picked up but not on the scale I envisaged.

Something was up.

The fact is actually that all Magic players, new and old, go through this cycle. It was actually nothing new for them to hear me say that I was taking a break. The thing they had seen before, and wanted to avoid, was that player who leaves Magic and sells their collection, thinking that this is the end of it. By all accounts, more often than what I could imagine, players return to the game months (even years) later. This, then, is where the heartbreaking regret comes in. Their advice was given so that I could avoid exactly that.

I have heard many a tale of this and that person who had such an awesome collection of cards only to return to the game having to start from scratch with their collections. I did take their advice and after dusting off my cards I built a fun deck and showed up one Friday night to play some Magic.

Those of you that know me would know that I am not a top ranked player, by far, and that my deck choices sometimes befuddle the mind. Then why do I play Magic? I gave it some thought and almost everybody would agree that I am in it for the fun and the social aspect of the game. Yes, those I call my friends are mainly the reason why I play Magic the Gathering.

I might not play at Nationals this year, hell I did not even play a qualifier, but I can guarantee you that you will see me up there in black & white calling time, doing deck checks and making the odd comment every now and then.

So I will see you on the 27th & 28th of August 2011 at Bernie’s Grill for Nationals.
